    Patient-based mobile alerting systems- requirements and expectations

    Patients with chronic conditions are not well supported by technical systems in managing their conditions. However, such systems could help patients to self-reliantly comply with their treatment. This help could be rendered in the form of alerting patients about condition-relevant issues, transmitting relevant parameters to healthcare providers and analysing these parameters according to guidelines specified by both patients and healthcare staff. If necessary, this analysis of condition parameters triggers the alerting of patients and healthcare providers about actions to be taken. In this paper, we present the results of a survey we have undertaken to verify and extend requirements we have identified for the design of a Mobile Alerting System for patients with chronic conditions. First of all, the results show that a Mobile Alerting System is desired by patients. Moreover, due to the inter- and intra-user variance of patients and healthcare staff, the system has to work in a context-aware manner and allow for personalised parameters in order to be adaptable to every user’s needs

    Event notification services: analysis and transformation of profile definition languages

    The integration of event information from diverse event notification sources is, as with meta-searching over heterogeneous search engines, a challenging task. Due to the complexity of profile definition languages, known solutions for heterogeneous searching cannot be applied for event notification. In this technical report, we propose transformation rules for profile rewriting. We transform each profile defined at a meta-service into a profile expressed in the language of each event notification source. Due to unavoidable asymmetry in the semantics of different languages, some superfluous information may be delivered to the meta-service. These notifications are then post-processed to reduce the number of spurious messages. We present a survey and classification of profile definition languages for event notification, which serves as basis for the transformation rules. The proposed rules are implemented in a prototype transformation module for a Meta-Service for event notification

    Specifying Single-user and Collaborative Profiles for Alerting Systems

    The 21st century is the age of information overload. Often, humans are incapable of processing all of the information that surrounds them and determining its relevance. The impact of overlooking crucial information ranges from annoying to fatal. Alerting systems help users deal with this vast amount of information by employing a push-based rather than a pull-based approach to information delivery. In this way, users receive the information they require at the appropriate moment. Users specify their alerting needs in a profile that is subscribed to the alerting system. The alerting system is continuously fed with data, and filters this data against all subscribed profiles. Whenever incoming data matches a profile, the subscriber is alerted. Although alerting systems solve the problem of information overload, the potential of these systems has not been fully put into practice. Alerting systems are either realised as dedicated systems that, at best, offer a set of possible profiles to choose from or, at worst, offer a preset profile for one purpose only. Alternatively, they are application frameworks that offer no support for the average user; that is, the specification of profiles is realised using a programming interface. Collaboration between users when specifying profiles is not supported. This thesis verifies the described situation by considering the example application domain of health care. Within this context, a requirements analysis was undertaken involving a patient-based online survey and interviews with health care providers. This analysis revealed the utility of alerting systems but a need for support for profile specification by end-users. It also identified the need for such a system to support the collaborative nature of health care. The shortcomings of alerting systems identified for the health-care area also exist in other domains. Hence, a variety of application areas will benefit from providing universal solutions to eliminate these shortcomings. Based on these findings, this thesis proposes the graphical profile specification language GPDL and an interactive single-user software tool that supports its use (GPDL-UI). The thesis introduces a novel collaborative alerting model for Information Systems. A collaborative extension of GPDL is implemented in the software tool CoastEd, an editor for the graphical specification of collaborative profiles. The developed languages and software tools target average users who have no expertise in specifying profiles involving logics and temporal constraints. The efficacy of the proposed languages and software were evaluated through three user studies. The first study examined interpretation and specification with GPDL. Based on the results of this first study, the single-user system GPDL-UI was designed and implemented and then evaluated in a second study. In turn, the lessons learned from the implementation and user studies for the single-user system influenced the development of the collaborative approach CoastEd; this editor was evaluated in the third study. The studies have shown that GPDL and GPDL-UI are suitable means for average users to effectively specify profiles in single-user alerting systems. High levels of accuracy were reached for specification and interpretation in both studies. GPDL-UI turned out to be a usable and effective software tool. The collaborative approach and CoastEd succeed in conveying the idea of collaborative profile specification to average users. Most types of collaborative profiles were successfully specified by users. For the initiator of the collaborative profile specification process, two types of profiles call for further research. Overall, the approach, languages and software tools developed are shown to be effective and merit future research in that area

    Eliciting usage contexts of safety-critical medical devices

    This position paper outlines our approach to improve the usage choice of suitable devices in different health care environments (contexts). Safety-critical medical devices are presumed to have undergone a thorough (user-centred) design process to optimize the device for the intended purpose, user group and environment. However, in real-life health care scenarios, actual usage may not reflect the original design parameters. We suggest the identification of further usage contexts for safety-critical medical devices through ethnographic and other studies, to assist better modelling of the challenges of different usage environments. In combination with system and interaction models, these context models can then be used for decision-support in choosing medical devices that are suitable for the intended environment

    You can't always sketch what you want: Understanding Sensemaking in Visual Query Systems

    Visual query systems (VQSs) empower users to interactively search for line charts with desired visual patterns, typically specified using intuitive sketch-based interfaces. Despite decades of past work on VQSs, these efforts have not translated to adoption in practice, possibly because VQSs are largely evaluated in unrealistic lab-based settings. To remedy this gap in adoption, we collaborated with experts from three diverse domains---astronomy, genetics, and material science---via a year-long user-centered design process to develop a VQS that supports their workflow and analytical needs, and evaluate how VQSs can be used in practice. Our study results reveal that ad-hoc sketch-only querying is not as commonly used as prior work suggests, since analysts are often unable to precisely express their patterns of interest. In addition, we characterize three essential sensemaking processes supported by our enhanced VQS. We discover that participants employ all three processes, but in different proportions, depending on the analytical needs in each domain. Our findings suggest that all three sensemaking processes must be integrated in order to make future VQSs useful for a wide range of analytical inquiries.Comment: Accepted for presentation at IEEE VAST 2019, to be held October 20-25 in Vancouver, Canada.     PAPC and the Wnt5a/Ror2 pathway control the invagination of the otic placode in Xenopus

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Paraxial protocadherin (PAPC) plays a crucial role in morphogenetic movements during gastrulation and somitogenesis in mouse, zebrafish and Xenopus. PAPC influences cell-cell adhesion mediated by C-Cadherin. A putative direct adhesion activity of PAPC is discussed. PAPC also promotes cell elongation, tissue separation and coordinates cell mass movements. In these processes the signaling function of PAPC in activating RhoA/JNK and supporting Wnt-11/PCP by binding to frizzled 7 (fz7) is important.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we demonstrate by loss of function experiments in Xenopus embryos that PAPC regulates another type of morphogenetic movement, the invagination of the ear placode. Knockdown of PAPC by antisense morpholinos results in deformation of the otic vesicle without altering otocyst marker expression. Depletion of PAPC could be rescued by full-length PAPC, constitutive active RhoA and by the closely related PCNS but not by classical cadherins. Also the cytoplasmic deletion mutant M-PAPC, which influences cell adhesion, does not rescue the PAPC knockdown. Interestingly, depletion of Wnt5a or Ror2 which are also expressed in the otocyst phenocopies the PAPC morphant phenotype.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>PAPC signaling via RhoA and Wnt5a/Ror2 activity are required to keep cells aligned in apical-basal orientation during invagination of the ear placode. Since neither the cytoplasmic deletion mutant M-PAPC nor a classical cadherin is able to rescue loss of PAPC we suggest that the signaling function of the protocadherin rather than its role as modulator of cell-cell adhesion is required during invagination of the ear placode.</p
